Backup & restore

Last updated: 7 September 2026

A backup is a portable copy of your financial plan. Henthu does not automatically upload it. Export it to a location you trust, and make a fresh copy before restoring another file.

What is included?

An export includes your accounts and pockets, their identifiers and settings, budget models and versions, monthly budget drafts and finalised snapshots, periodic-expense information, goals and recorded funding history. Device preferences and onboarding progress are not included.

Backups use the shared Henthu JSON format, version 2. The app can also import supported version 1 files. The maximum import size is 20 MB. The shared format supports transfers between the Android and iOS versions that understand that backup version; keep both apps updated.

Where does a backup go?

You choose the destination in the phone’s system file picker. It can be a folder on the device or a storage service available through that picker. A file stored only on your phone may be lost with the phone. A cloud destination is governed by that provider’s terms and privacy policy.

There is no Henthu-hosted backup, automatic export schedule or multi-device cloud sync. Your phone’s own backup and migration services are separate and may copy app data depending on their settings.

Is the file protected?

The exported JSON file is not encrypted or password-protected by Henthu. It contains readable financial information. Use a protected storage location, restrict sharing, and consider an encrypted storage service or container if you need stronger protection. Do not put it in a public folder, a public repository, or this website’s deployment directory.

How to restore safely

  1. Export your current data first and keep that file separate.
  2. Open the app’s backup and restore settings, then choose the file to import.
  3. Review the file details and record counts shown by the app.
  4. Confirm Replace local data only when you are ready to replace your current records.

Restore replaces the local dataset. It does not merge two budgets or devices. Existing accounts, models, goals and monthly budgets, including finalised ones, are replaced by the contents of the selected backup.

The app validates the file before replacement and applies the restore atomically. Cancelling the preview does not change your data. A rejected or failed import should leave the previous dataset intact. Keeping a separate current backup remains the best recovery precaution.

Copies, deletion and recovery

Removing records from the app does not delete earlier exports or operating-system backups. Delete those copies separately, including any cloud trash or version history where needed. We cannot recover a deleted file, unlock encrypted storage, or retrieve a server copy of your budget.

Before moving phones, verify that the destination app accepts your backup and that your records look correct before clearing the old device. Keep a known-good copy while you check.
